The New Heaven and New Earth

Spread the love

Q: In Revelation 21:8 it speaks of a new heaven and a new earth. Are we to take this literally? Are we to take this literally? Is there to be a complete new heaven and new earth, or just this old one cleaned off? In Isaiah 65:17, it says “I create new heavens and a new earth.” This has been discussed in our Bible class, and some think it should be taken literally.

A: From Psalm 102:25, 26, where we read that the present heavens and earth shall “perish” and “be changed”, and from 2 Pet. 3:5-13, where the former world, “being overflowed with water, perished” (vs. 6), referring to the flood of Noah, it would seem that the new heavens and earth will be the old ones renovated, this time by fire rather than water.

  1. A new Heaven and a new Earth – the current heavens and earth will be replaced. Only God knows the exact way it will be accomplished . We believers, in our glorified physical bodies (1Corinthians 15:35-58, such comfort in this passage!) will inhabit a world which has been re-created to remove all sin, death, illness, worry… everything else that sin has brought about as its consequence. Then this Earth will be heavenly. New heavens even suggests a re-creation of the entire universe. There will be no place for sin to hide! All that is corruptible will be destroyed and replaced (and raised) with that which is incorruptible and perfect and God will reign over all. That is when Isaiah 11:6 , “the wolf will love with the lamb. ..” will be fulfilled.
