Discussion question on 1 John 4 – What do you think?

Spread the love

Here’s some meat for you to chew on for a while about God’s love and about that being wrapped up in Jesus. Here’s the section I’m inviting us to focus on, and I’ve included a link to the whole chapter at the end, so you can read it in context. There’s so much good stuff here. ALL COMMENTS WELCOME!::

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God, and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. 8He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

That’s an amazing love and response. What do these verses mean to you?

  1. If a few lines could sum up the Gospel it might be these. The nature of God, what it means to be a believer or what it looks like to be an unbeliever. How we can be sure God loves us…that He gave His only Son to save us from our sin, and not because we loved Him, but because He loved us. So, we didn’t and can’t deserve it. It is a gift of life Love from Love Itself…for God is Love.
So, His love is perfect and ours is not. But still we are called to love if we are to be truly His.
But in my sinful nature, how well do I love? How can I love God and my neighbor more perfectly? What things get in the way of giving perfect love? Pride, envy, anger, entitlement, ingratitude? Looking at that list of sins that block love I recognize that they all have one thing in common…something I want and think I should have! So, if instead of falling into one of these, I accept the perfect will of God for me in all things with trust and gratitude, I will grow in my ability to love God and my neighbor.
Lord, please help me to internalize this and put it into practice, that I may show love to the world to glorify you with my life. And, thank You, Father, for my Savior, because I’ll probably forget myself ten times before lunch. And, You know that and love me anyway!💙
